Biographical sketch of the life of Thomas S. Twiss (1804-1871), who worked as an Indian Agent for the U.S. government during the Civil War. A New York native, educated at West Point; married to Elizabeth Sherrill Twiss (d.1866) in 1828; appointed chair at South Carolina College as a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy, 1835; became an Indian Agent for the U.S. government,1855; charged with accepting bribes from the Sioux in exchange for goods and "acquiring" a Sioux woman, 1856; reinstated to his position as Indian Agent , 1859; migrated west with his family and lived with the Sioux until his death in 1871.
